# Bible Reader

> Read supported Bible translations offline with Compare mode, red-letter text, verse indicators, tablet annotations, and swipe navigation between chapters.

The Bible Reader is the main screen in Seed Scroll. It supports KJV+, WEB, RV1909, and BSB reading, with translation-aware study tools for original-language exploration.

Use Compare mode when you want to keep two passages visible side by side, such as comparing the same chapter in context with another passage.

Supported Bible text is stored locally after install or download, so you can read without an internet connection.

## Choose a translation

Tap the translation label in the reader navigation bar to switch between supported translations. See [Bible Translations](/features/bible-translations) for the full support matrix.

The reader remembers your active translation and uses it when opening passages from search, notes, reading plans, playlists, and notifications.

## Navigating the Bible

### Jump to a book, chapter, or verse

Tap the **navigation bar** at the top of the screen to open the full-screen book and chapter picker. The navigation bar shows the current passage using readable book names so it is easier to tell where you are before jumping.

Select a book, then a chapter, and optionally a specific verse to scroll directly to it. The picker groups books into **Old Testament** and **New Testament** sections, with quick-jump buttons for moving between the sections.

When you open the picker, the book list starts in its default position. Use the **Old Testament** and **New Testament** quick-jump buttons to move between sections; the active button updates as you scroll.

The picker validates the reference before navigating. If a chapter or verse is not valid for the selected book, Seed Scroll asks you to correct it first.

### Compare two passages

Tap the **Compare** button in the reader header to open a split-pane layout. The left pane keeps your primary reader passage, and the right pane opens a compare passage.

Both panes use your active translation. For how the two passages behave when you change translation or leave and return, see [Compare Passages](/features/compare-passages). To see one verse worded across several translations instead, see [Compare Translations](/features/compare-translations).

Each pane has its own **Change** action for choosing a book and chapter. Use the bottom **Prev** and **Next** controls in each pane to move that pane through scripture without changing the other pane.

Tap the open-out icon in either pane to open that pane as the main reader passage. Use this when you want to long-press a verse, study a Strong's word, or use the standard verse study panel without losing your comparison setup.

When you open a pane this way, Seed Scroll shows a **Back to compare** action above the reader. Tap it to restore the previous primary and compare passages.

Compare mode keeps both panes independently scrollable. When you change passages, skeleton rows hold the reading space in place while the next chapter loads.

<Note>
  Compare mode itself is a lightweight read-only reader layout. Open a pane in the main reader when you need verse study tools. Immersive annotations and stylus markup remain in the standard and immersive reader experiences.
</Note>

### Listen to a chapter

Tap the audio play button to listen when the active translation supports audio. See [Bible Audio](/features/bible-audio) for supported translations and playback details.

### Move between chapters

  </Tab>
</Tabs>

<Tip>
  On iOS you can swipe from the edge of the screen for a fluid chapter transition.
</Tip>

### Desktop keyboard shortcuts

On desktop web, you can use keyboard shortcuts while reading:

| Shortcut | Action |
| - | - |
| **Left Arrow** | Previous chapter |
| **Right Arrow** | Next chapter |
| **Up Arrow** / **Down Arrow** | Scroll the page |
| **G** | Open the passage picker |
| **/** | Open Bible Search |

Shortcuts only run when you are not typing in an input field.

### Ask the Chapter Guide

Near the end of a chapter, premium users can ask the Chapter Guide questions scoped to that chapter. Use the suggested prompts for summaries, speakers, places, and key people, or type your own chapter-level question.

### Your reading position is saved automatically

Every time you read, Seed Scroll saves your position — book, chapter, and verse — in the background. When you return to the reader, it opens exactly where you left off.

## Display options

### Red-letter mode

When red-letter mode is on, the words of Jesus appear in red. Toggle this in **Settings → Reader Settings**.

Red-letter highlighting is range-aware, so partial verse ranges and terminal verse ranges can highlight only the words marked as spoken by Jesus.

### Dark and light theme

The reader automatically follows your device's system appearance. You can override this in **Settings → Reader Settings** to lock it to either theme.

### Text size

Adjust the font size in **Settings → Reader Settings** to suit your reading preference. You can also pinch in or out directly in the reader to resize the Bible text while you are reading.

### Immersive book mode

Tap the immersive reader control to enter a distraction-free book-style layout. If Compare mode is open, Seed Scroll exits Compare mode first so immersive reading starts from a stable single-passage layout.

## Verse indicators

Small colored dots appear beside verse numbers to show what is attached to that verse.

| Color | Meaning |
| - | - |
| Blue | You have a personal study note on this verse |
| Red | A video teaching is linked to this verse |
| Purple | Someone you follow has a public note on this verse |

Tap a verse with an indicator to open the verse panel and view the attached content.

<Note>
  Verse indicators also appear for verses that are part of your active reading plan.
</Note>

## Opening the verse study panel

Long-press any verse to open the study panel at the bottom of the screen. See [Verse Study Panel](/features/verse-study-panel) for the full workflow.

<Note>
  The verse panel only appears after a long-press. A short tap on a verse selects it for copying or sharing.
</Note>

On tablet-sized layouts, the Bible Reader uses the extra width for a split study workspace. Tap a verse to keep scripture in the left column and open the verse panel in a right-side rail. When a referenced verse opens from that rail, only the reader column changes, so the study tools stay in view.

## Tablet annotations

On supported tablet layouts, immersive reading mode includes stylus-oriented annotation controls. Use them to mark up scripture while keeping the reader focused on the passage.

Annotation tools are designed for tablet study sessions, so they appear only when the screen size and layout can support the extra writing surface.

From the panel you can access:
