# Cross-References

> Discover related verses that connect thematically across the entire Bible, sourced from a local 22 MB database that works fully offline.

Cross-references are verse-to-verse connections that link related passages across the Bible — verses that share a theme, quote the same source, or shed light on each other. Seed Scroll stores all cross-reference data locally in a 22 MB database, so the feature works without a network connection.

## How to open cross-references for a verse

<Steps>
  <Step title="Long-press a verse">
    Press and hold any verse in the reader to open the verse study panel. On tablets, tap a verse to open the panel beside the reader.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tap the Cross-References tab">
    In the panel, tap the **Cross-References** tab (the network icon). The panel shows the number of cross-references found for that verse.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tap a cross-reference to open it">
    Tap any result to navigate directly to that verse in the reader.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Verses with cross-references show a verse indicator dot beside the verse number. You can spot them at a glance while reading.
</Tip>

## Phones, tablets, and desktop

Seed Scroll adapts cross-references to the amount of screen space available:

| Device | Behavior |
| - | - |
| Phone | The verse panel shows **View all Cross-References**. Tap it to open the full cross-reference screen with book filtering, bookmarks, and study actions. |
| Tablet | The reader and verse panel appear side by side. Cross-reference previews load in the panel, and tapping a related verse updates the reader column without closing the panel. |
| Desktop web | Cross-reference previews and related navigation stay in the desktop study rail, keeping the reader visible while you compare passages. |

On tablet and desktop, the cross-reference panel includes **Back to original verse** after you open a related passage. Use it to return the reader to the verse you started from.

## Filtering results by book

When a verse has many cross-references, you can filter the list to a single Bible book:

1. Tap the **book dropdown** at the top of the cross-references screen.
2. Select a book name. The count beside each book shows how many cross-references come from that book.
3. Tap **All books** to clear the filter and return to the full list.

## Use a referenced verse

Tap any cross-reference result to open that verse in the Bible Reader. The reader navigates to the exact book, chapter, and verse.

On phones, use the navigation back button to return to your previous location. On tablet and desktop, use **Back to original verse** in the cross-reference panel when you want to return to the source verse while keeping the panel open.

Each result also includes actions for saving or studying the verse:

* Tap the **bookmark icon** to save the cross-reference to **Studies → Saved → Bible verses**.
* Tap the **+ icon** to start a manual study note or AI-generated study from that verse.

## Work with multiple cross-references

Use selection mode when several related verses belong together.

1. Select the cross-reference results you want to use.
2. Tap **Bookmark** to save all selected verses with one label.
3. Tap **Study** to create a manual study note or start an AI-generated study from the selected references.

Seed Scroll preserves verse ranges when adding selected cross-references to a study.

## How cross-references are ranked

Results are ordered by **vote count** — a measure of how strongly that connection is supported across multiple reference works. Higher-voted connections appear first.

<Note>
  Cross-reference data comes from a curated database of verse connections compiled from classical concordances and reference works. The data is bundled with the app and does not change unless you update Seed Scroll.
